Credibility, Controversy, and the Challenge of Engaging in Policy

Advancing Science And Policy (ASAP) is hosting

Dr. Stephen Hilgartner explores the challenges facing scientists who seek to engage in the policymaking process. In the present political climate, these challenges extend beyond the longstanding difficulties of establishing a credible voice about controversial issues and presenting complexity in appropriately simplified ways. I argue that effective interaction will require rejecting such slogans as “post-truth politics” and “evidence-based policy” and developing a deeper analysis grounded in the sociology of knowledge. Light dinner provided. Open to grad students, postdocs and faculty.
